Welcome to the Hughes collection web site, this is a companion to a series of events that will run in Bromsgrove and North Worcestershire throughout 2005 and 2006 with the aim of raising public awareness of The Hughes Collection an archive of Victorian and Edwardian photographs.

The Photographer Joseph Hughes opened a Bromsgrove studio in Bromsgrove in June 1897 and offered to introduce his work to the public with a set of special prices, he must have been a qualified success in attracting the custom local people as over the next ten years he built up a catalogue of at least 2000 glass negatives. It was these negatives that were passed to Mr. Bob Richardson in 1976 Bob is a local history enthusiast who since then has looked after the delicate collection. A few years ago as the equipment became affordable it became possible to scan these negatives and create a searchable archive.

It has taken two years to assemble the complete archive and with the aid of a Local Heritage Initiative grant the pictures are now available to local and family historians via this web site and at our series of event in the coming months. The Local Heritage Initiative is a national grant scheme that helps local groups to investigate, explain and care for their local landscape, landmarks, traditions and culture. The Heritage lottery Fund provides the grant but the scheme is a partnership, administered by the Countryside Agency with additional funding form the Nationwide Building Society. This site can be utilised by using the buttons at the top of the page, which will help you navigate the site and introduce you to links with similar areas. You can search using names or key words for relatives and Bromsgrove characters from 100 years ago,

Can you supply us with any information about the subjects of Mr. Hughes cameras? Do you have any enquires that we can help you with?
